Just for Kids? Memory and Emotion in Animated Films | 9PM in the Planetarium

with Robert Ribera, PhD, Instructor of Film Studies at PSU | When we think back on childhood, some of our earliest memories are of animated films. What is it about these images that makes them linger in our minds? How can anthropmorphized animals seep into our memories, defining our experiences of loss, isolation, joy, and morality? Animation has long been dismissed as simply for children, yet the medium has an unmatched ability to tap into our emotional lives, no matter our age. This lecture will examine the ways that animation provides us with a look at the details that make us human, and why these memories linger.
